What is oncology?

Generally speaking, oncology is the study and treatment of tumors. Medical oncologist are sub-specialist doctors who treat cancers (eg. breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, pancreatic cancer etc.) utilizing methods that include targeted therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, stem cell transplant, CAR-T cell therapy, and more.
 

What is Integrative Oncology?

Defined by the Society for Integrative Oncology as a patient-centered, evidence-informed field of cancer care that utilizes mind and body practices, natural products, and/or lifestyle modifications from different traditions alongside the conventional cancer treatments listed above. In a sense, it’s the best of both worlds.

What is integrative Medicine?

The philosophy of integrative medicine is that health is more than the absence of disease, but also includes nourishment of a persons physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual life. It focuses not just on treatment, but prevention, and rehabilitation in a team centered approach, that focuses on the individual (tailored treatments). Integrative medicine uses evidence based conventional medicine alongside evidence based or informed care from other cultures and treatment forms to help patients manage, maintain, and restore health.

What is the Anti-Inflammatory Diet?

The Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, teaches that the anti-inflammatory diet is an eating pattern that combines healthy components of traditional Mediterranean and Asian diets in order to maximize the healing potential of foods. It focuses on increasing consumption of beneficial anti-inflammatory foods, while reducing pro-inflammatory food intake, in order to attenuate and mitigate physiologic processes associated with chronic diseases. Foods considered to have anti-inflammatory properties include foods of marine origin, legumes, fruits and berries, whole grains, vegetables, nuts, and herbs and spices.
